10 Ways To Create Extra Storage Space In Your Bathroom

Finding extra storage space in your bathroom can be tricky, even if you are not pushed for size. Due to the nature of a Bathroom, it is a damp environment, which means that as much air needs to circulate as possible, which can make storing your items tricky. However, it is possible to create extra space, without compromising the quality of your bathroom. Here are just 10 ways to do this.

1. Custom Fit Shelving

One big mistake that people tend to make when thinking about storage is not fitting a shelf, because the generically made ones are either too large or small. Instead, think about having custom fitted shelving made, so you can utilise all areas in your bathroom. These can be created as a fairly easy DIY project and you can make it exact to your bathroom. You’ll be surprised as to just how many toiletries you can fit onto small shelves, and it will encourage you to keep your bathroom clutter free.

2. Install a Cupboard Under the Sink

Not only does a cupboard under the sink hide the unsightly bottom of the basin and all of the pipework, but it creates a really handy storage area. By creating a cupboard, you are simply utilising free space, so it will not take up anymore room, which is particularly useful if you have a small bathroom, as it will not make it appear any smaller. Keep this in line with the overall design of the bathroom to ensure that it flows and does not look out of place, as if it is different, your eye will instantly be drawn to that area.

3. Wall Tower Rail

Create a streamlined feature on bathroom walls with a modern towel rail. Not only does this utilise the most of the space but also fits perfectly within contemporary layouts. Towel rails are available in a range of different styles but possibly the most popular choice at this present time are chrome varieties. Wall towel rails are more practical and take up less space than standard radiators and are therefore the preferred choice in modern bathrooms and en suites.

4. In-Shower Shelves

If you have a large family, or just have a lot of toiletries, but are fortunate enough to have a large, separate shower, install some in-shower shelves. There are a huge variety of styles, from those that just suck on to the shower wall, to custom made ones. It will de-clutter the rest of your bathroom, and they will handy to access during your shower. It is a win win situation really. This is not so good if you have a small shower cubicle, as it will end up feeling incredibly cramped, or a bath and shower combination; however, if you have a shower curtain, you can consider hanging shelves that can be hooked over the curtain rail and will have the same effect.

5. Change your Bathroom Door

This one may sound quite bizarre, but it can be incredibly effective. If you have limited space, changing your bathroom door to one that slides open, as opposed to one that opens inwards, means that you can utilise the space that would have been behind the door. An open door cuts off a surprising amount of floor space – space that could be used if a sliding door was installed. Although this will be a slightly more costly alternative, it is worth doing if you are able to.

6. Don't Ignore the Corners

Don’t forget about the corners of your bathroom, and think about how you can use them. If you are considering changing the entire layout of the room, and do have access to a bigger budget, think about installing a corner sink, or even a corner toilet. Changing the layout to utilise the space that you do have will not only make your bathroom feel larger, but it will also create more storage options that you previously did not have access to.

7. Door Hooks

If you are looking for an easy way to create an extra storage option for your bathroom, installing over the door hooks for towels, and hanging organisers will instantly create the much needed space, without taking up any valuable space. These are also very affordable, and will work for people on a small budget that does not want to make any major changes to the room.

8. Invest in a Wheelie Trolley

If you are again, lucky enough to have a large floor area, and just require extra storage, a wheeled trolley is a good option. These will create a huge amount of extra storage, whether it is used for toiletries or towels. If you get one that has been mounted onto wheels it means that you can move it around the bathroom and tuck it out of the way when it is not in use. This again, is a fairly inexpensive option, but is one that is better suited to those with a larger space, as it would just make a small bathroom appear even more cluttered.

9. Have Bespoke Cupboards Fitted

If you have a large enough budget, have a designer come round and design some bespoke cupboards that will fit exactly where you require. Once they have been fitted, ensure that you organise them so you know exactly where everything is. If everything in your bathroom has a place, you will be more inclined to keep your bathroom looking tidy, and will give the appearance of a larger area.

10. Tiled Alcove

If you have a small bathroom with a small shower cubicle, a tiled alcove is an excellent way to create enough space to store all of your toiletries, without taking up any room at all. This is because a tiled alcove is built into the wall, so it will not stick out at all. Again, this is quite a drastic change, and is better suited to those with a larger budget, but once it has been done, it will really create extra space that you would not have been able to use before.
