15 Space Saving Ideas For Small Kitchens

Houses are getting smaller and smaller, and whilst there are many benefits to having a small room, particularly if you live by yourself, a small kitchen can sometimes seem problematic. Don’t become disheartened by a small amount of space though – here are 15 ways that you can make your kitchen seem better by utilising the space that you do have a little better.

1. Invest in a Pot Rack

Not only are pot racks a really nice way for you display your pans, it is also an excellent space saving. These are mounted on your wall, allowing you to place bulky saucepans up and out of the way, without taking up space in your cupboards. This is a great all round, easy to install space saver. You can also use other hooks to store cups and utensils etc.

2. Have an Island Fitted

This one may seem like strange one, but bear with it. If you have floor space, do consider installing an island. This will create extra counter space, as well as another storage area, and at the same time can double up as a dining table. There are many that you can get, but consider one with an area underneath that the seats can be stored in when they are not in use.

3. Re-think the Positioning of your Sink

This one will require more work than a lot of them, but it can make a big difference. If you have a corner part of the counter that never get used, why not consider moving your sink to that area, freeing up more space elsewhere? If there is an area that is not being used, moving your sink here will mean that you can use the area where the sink was, freeing up more space.

4. Pull Out Pantry

Pull out pantries are an excellent space saving idea. If you have a small are between cupboards, or the cupboard and the wall, you can have a slide out pantry that is the depth of the cupboards. This does not have to very wide, as it can be fitted from the floor upwards. You will be surprised at just how much you can fit in there, in what you thought was such a small space.

5. Install Shelves Above Sink

The wall above the sink rarely gets used for anything, so why not install some shelves as useful storage options? You can use them to keep your cookbooks, or even to store crockery. What you want to use these shelves for is entirely up to you, but it is an easy, cheap and convenient way to create that little extra space that you need in a small kitchen.

6. The Sky is the Limit

Install cupboards that go all the way up to the ceiling. Obviously, these will not be as accessible as the lower ones, but can be used to store items that you do not use on a regular basis. If you feel that this would make your kitchen look a little dark and claustrophobic, you could think about just fitting them on one wall. You will be surprised at how much space it does create.

7. Avoid Knife Blocks

If you want to get a set of knives, avoid the knife blocks that can be bulky and take up room on the counter. Instead, look for one that can be mounted onto the wall. Place it in an easy to reach place, so you don’t risk dropping the knives as you reach for them, leaving you with clear counters that you can work on.

8. Small but Mighty Appliances

Your appliances do not have to be large to do the job they are meant to do. This is especially true if you are living by yourself, or just with one other person. You can get slim line cookers, fridges, dishwashers and washing machines that will do exactly the same job and are just as powerful, but will be able to fit into your kitchen a lot better.

9. Remove the Kitchen Door

OK, so this one will only work well if you have a kitchen that leads off from another room, such as the dining room, but removing the door and widening the opening will not only allow you to combine the space in the other room with the kitchen, it will also make your kitchen feel a lot bigger than it actually is.

10. Keep your Surfaces Clear

If you do only have a small amount of counter space, do not clutter these up. Make sure that everything has a home and these are kept as clear as possible. Not only will this make the area look larger and clearer, it is also a lot more practical, as it means that you can then use all of the area that you do have.

11. Utilise Corner Cupboards

The corner cupboards are always a bit of a nightmare and never end up getting used properly. However; with the addition of a few useful accessibility options, such as pull out shelf, or a Lazy Susan, you can clearly see what you have and easily access it, instantly meaning that space can become occupied.

12. Fit an Articulated Faucet for Small Sink Areas

If you have trouble washing your larger pots and pans in your sink because it is small, seriously consider having an articulated faucet fitted. This will allow the tap to be moved out of the way, leaving the sink more easily accessible. Although this is not a space saving idea, it will help make washing up easier for those with small kitchens.

13. Get a Rolling Cart

Although you may think that this sounds like quite a dated suggestion, they can be an absolute god send for small kitchens. Not only can the double up as an extra counter when you are cooking, or preparing food, but they can also be used as storage when not in use. Because they are mobile, it means that you can use it wherever you need space at that particular moment.

14. Don't Forget About the Area Above the Fridge

Think of the top of the fridge as an extra shelf. You can use this area to store anything you need to, but if you want to keep things hidden, why not invest in a box that matches the theme to your kitchen. This keeps this suggestion both practical and stylish.

15. Custom-made Appliances

Obviously, this is not for those on a budget, but if you are struggling to find appliances that fit into the dimensions of your kitchens, it may be worth looking into custom-made ones. Although the initial cost will be more, they will be able to create pieces that will fit perfectly into your kitchen, giving the appearance of an overall larger area.
