Bringing The Mediterranean Into Your Home

When choosing bathroom tiles for a shower area it's important you select options which suit not just your style but also the requirements of the space in terms of practicality. Different spaces in the home have varying requirements so if you happen to be looking for tiles to install in your bathroom for instance, it is important to know what tiles will work and what tiles may not be compatible.

Traditional Tile Designs

A Mediterranean style is a very obvious, noticeable, yet simple and traditional one. When considering this design, think of a simple back drop of earthy tones, whilst incorporating shades of yellow, gold and orange as your base colours. Brighter colours such as a coral, scarlet, turquoise and sapphire are also very Mediterranean and is a way of bringing the beautiful colour of the sea into your home. When thinking of furniture, consider heavy, solid wood pieces. Pine is a very popular choice. Wrought iron, copper and gold, as well as clay are brilliant materials to consider for accessories and soft furnishings, to really bring the Mediterranean feel into your home. One of the biggest features of the Mediterranean is the outdoor lifestyle as well, so to really recreate this style, do not forget to continue your theme outside as well. Make your garden a really welcoming place to be, so that, on the occasions that we do have nice, sunny weather, you can use your garden as a space to entertain. Read on for some simple ideas to incorporate the above into your home.

The colour of the room is so important for a Mediterranean themed room. Stick to neutral, warm, yellow tones on the wall. For those who want to keep their walls quite neutral, you could paint your walls with a light beige colour, with splashes, or a feature wall in a deep red or a bright yellow, so you have incorporated this in somewhere without it being too much. When thinking of any colour, just remember that the colours of the Mediterranean stem from nature. Whether this is seen in the garden, house, or even on people’s clothes, they are all natural colours, whether this is the deep blue from the ocean, or the earthy tones of the sun and ground. Many Mediterranean properties will have tiled floor fitted, as this suits the environment better. The weather is a lot warmer than it is in England, and tiled floors will help to keep the house cool. This can still be recreated in your home though, as tiled floors are becoming much more popular, and more and more materials allow under floor heating to be fitted beneath them. This allows you to achieve the look, whilst not having to suffer as a result. Ceramic and terracotta tiles will allow you to keep in theme; but again, you can choose any tile that is earthy in colour.

Textured Tiles

The texture of items in your home is very important to really achieve that Mediterranean finish. Walls are kept plain, and are made from a textured plaster which tends to be painted, and smooth, tiled floors. Wood, and in particular pine is incredibly popular, so think about investing in some heavy, high quality wooden items. If you have any wooden beams in your home, do not be tempted to paint these. Rustic, natural wood is incredibly popular in Mediterranean inter design. In terms of fabrics, there is not much that is not recommended. The fabrics should be bright, in order to inject a little colour into your newly decorated home, with brightly coloured wrought iron lamps. If you like the idea of tiled flooring, but not under floor heating, a plush rug, or any oversized, textured mat will add warmth to the room. To really get involved with the theme, you could consider adding wooden shutters to the windows to add depth into the room. Again, these are used in the Mediterranean as they do not capture the heat as much as curtains do, but they also look great in a themed room, and really add to the traditional style. Another way to go wild with the theme is to add different textures into your garden, where you could consider having a water feature fitted. Water is often seen in Mediterranean homes, whether this is in a courtyard, or a back garden and is a very effective way to bring the Mediterranean feel back home. We will discuss how you can transform your garden in more detail later on.

Decorative Designs

Of course, if you did not want to make any design and decorative changes to your home; you could simply add some accessories. Visit second hand shops, as well as car boot sales and look for items that look like you could have picked them up on holiday. Think about intricately designed candleholders, and wrought iron items. Brighten up and open up your home with the addition of large mirrors, and think about adding deep cobalt blue glass accessories, and colourful pottery. However, do not overdo it. Mediterranean homes are very tasteful, so remember the saying that less can be, and probably is more.

As we previously mentioned a lot of the Mediterranean culture is spent outside, so if you really want the full feel of the culture in your home, it is important not to forget your garden. Whether your garden is big or small, there are ways that you can bring the warm Mediterranean influence into your home. If you really want to embrace the theme, you can consider painting the walls of your home, a sandy colour with large terracotta plant pots scattered around. Ensure that you have a nice relaxing area, with comfy garden furniture, and if your garden is large enough, consider having a complete alfresco dining area. This is the time for you to bring in the wrought iron features again, with iron chairs and a large, glass topped table. Now, obviously, the weather is not guaranteed quite like it is in the Mediterranean. Therefore, ensure that you are kept warm, and introduce a fire pit, with seats surrounding it, as a way to cater for the weather but also keep in tune with the continued theme. Make your garden a welcoming, relaxing area that is just a continuation of your home.
